Gyrotons

Direction of researches:

    The gyroton is a multi-stage amplifier of an initially rectilinear relativistic electron beam (REB), in which modulation (circular scanning) of the REB is accomplished in rotating fields of chain of modulating circular cavities. The REB energy extraction take place in long cavities under the condition of electron cyclotron resonance with the rotating field. A relativistic mathematical model of the nonlinear interaction process is defined and gyroton designs with different types of output resonator modes are compared.

Main Results:

    The gyroton is an efficient super-power microwave amplifier. An efficiency as great as 80-90% may be achieved in a gyroton with a 2-3 stage modulator at normalised to wave length initial radius of beam r=0.4 with optimized design and operating conditions. Experimental results obtained using a simple modification of a gyroton support the estimations of the gyrotons efficiency given in our works. Based on the limiting calue r=0.4, the operating range of the fyroton lies in the frequency from 109 to 3x1010 GHz, that is, it covers the region intermediate between gyrocons and gyrotrons.
